The Earl Backcountry Tablet is the long awaited tablet that is due to ship next month. Whether it does or not is still yet to be seen. It started last year as a crowdfunded project that received plenty of backers to move into a development and production stage. The Earl has a slew of features that really make it an intriguing outdoor gadget. Though we come from the school of thought of “unplugging” and leaving gadgets at home while in the backcountry the Earl is something we could see packing around. The features include: a flexible, E-ink screen that is visible in direct sunlight, the touch screen is glove friendly, waterproof/dust proof/shock proof/, a solar panel that charges the Earl in 5 hours, and preloaded topo maps that cover the US, Canada, and Mexico. That’s not even mentioning the GPS chipset, the emergency radio, internal weather sensors, and the 2 way radio that has a 20 mile range. We are literally salivating over the features but we are still sitting back to see if this tablet will actually come to market. In this next month we will see. To be continued…. If you want to take the risk and “pre-order” the Earl click the link below. Comes in 2 different colors and can be picked up for $299.00 which includes the 100k preloaded maps or $349.00 that has the 24k resolution preloaded maps.
